BLACKWOOD – Even as Camden County College’s campuses remain on lockdown because of the ongoing pandemic, the nursing program is finding ways to meet its recruitment and enrollment goals with virtual events. On Nov. 25, program director Professor Fathia Richardson held an online information session for interested potential nursing students.

The information session held on Nov. 25 was one of many such sessions the nursing program has held this semester. Richardson has held them at least once every other week this semester. She said she believes the frequent online sessions have been beneficial to attendees, who can participate from anywhere and have more opportunities to fit them into their schedules.

“We normally have face-to-face info sessions,” Richardson said. “I think the virtual sessions may be even better.”

With the sessions being more frequent than they would have been as in-person meetings, a typical virtual session can have fewer attendees than would be expected at an in-person event. However, overall attendance and interest in the nursing program are on par with an average school year, Richardson said. With an average of 25 attendees per session and two or three sessions per month since September, Richardson’s virtual information sessions have brought in hundreds of potential new students for fall 2021.

The nursing program sees an equal split of new students just starting on their college path and returning students looking for a new career path.

“We have students who have already achieved degrees and they are looking to become nurses,” Richardson said.

This is the case for session attendee Katherine Chadwick, a 24-year-old from Somerdale. Chadwick already has a degree in sociology from Rowan University but was considering a change of career to become a nurse. She said she was impressed with the presentation and credits it with solidifying her decision to move forward in her new path. Chadwick is studying for her Test of Academic Skills and hopes to be accepted into CCC’s Our Lady of Lourdes nursing program for the fall 2021 semester.

“I’m very excited to start this new journey,” she said.

The nursing information sessions aren’t just for potential students. They are also required attendance for all students who are newly enrolled in the nursing program. The sessions detail the program requirements for each degree path offered by the college, partner and transfer programs offered through Rutgers University, help students plan and prepare for nursing exams, and give them an opportunity to ask any questions they may have about what career path is best for them.

The registration deadline to enroll for fall 2021 is April 1, 2021. A final information session for the fall semester is scheduled for 1 p.m. Dec. 9.
