BLACKWOOD – The Pine Barons Barbershop Chorus will perform April 2 at the Dennis G. Flyer Theater on the Camden County College Blackwood campus. The annual spring show will be held at 2 and 7:30 p.m.

According to its website, the Pine Barons Barbershop Chorus is “an extraordinary group of gentlemen who gather together in celebration of the art form known as barbershop music.” As of now, the Pine Barons Barbershop Chorus is made up of 48 active members who range in age from 15 to 87.

John Celani, 79, one of the group’s active members, said, “We meet every Monday at the St. Andrew’s Methodist Church from 7 to 10 p.m. for practice.” The group belongs to the Cherry Hill, N.J., chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society.

The group is led by musical director Rich Gray, who along with a large board of other committed members helps organize the group and its events. The group has typically performed at high schools in the area but Celani said, “Because of financial arrangements the high schools became out of range. We couldn’t sell enough tickets.” In addition to high schools, the group performs for civic and charitable organizations, private groups, churches, community events and fundraisers.

The group uses funds raised through events to pay rent to the church and to sustain main stage programs. The group performs two shows a year, one in April and the other in December. Celani said, “Hopefully students will show up and if they do, we’ll even offer them a discounted price.”

Matthew Stauffer, 19, a freshman at the Camden County College Blackwood campus, said, “It sounds like a good event for a good cause.”

In addition to the Pine Barons Barbershop Chorus, guest quartet Bourbon Street Four will perform along with guest singers Profecy from Rowan University.

Advance tickets for the show are $20 for adults, $15 for those age 60 and older, $5 for children ages 13 to 18 and free for children younger than age 13. Tickets at the door are $25 for adults, $20 for those age 60 and older, $5 for children ages 13 to 18 and free for children younger than age 13.
