Driving hunger from our communities. – Philabundance
Philabundance is a local organization that seeks to defeat hunger and malnutrition in the Delaware Valley. According to their website, they distribute food to about 72,000 people every week. One of the ways that Philabundance raises money is through fundraisers like their “Philabundances’s Not At All A Ball” event. But this past weekend, on April 26th, they held their 4th Cupcake Smash. This event gives amateur and professional bakers alike the opportunity to compete against one another to make a cupcake that will win over both the judges and the attendees.
To get an inside look at the event, I talked to Jess Ercolino, a South Jersey native who has won “People’s Choice” in the amateur division two years in a row. For this year’s Cupcake Smash, the competitors based their cupcakes off of Philabundance’s most needed items. After some brainstorming and test tasting, Jess decided to make a chocolate chili cupcake with raspberry jalapeño jam filling, topped with Kahlua buttercream frosting and pieces of Cinnamon Life Cereal. This delicious dessert, which she named, “Cocoa Diablo,” was a hit at this year’s event, and she won her third “People’s Choice” trophy.
Will she be competing again next year?
“Probably not,” Jess says.
Well isn’t that good news for all the local amateur bakers! If you think you can fill Miss Ercolino’s baking gloves and step up to the cupcake tray, then you’d “batter” contact Melissa Templeton at CakesforCauses@gmail.com and register for next year’s event (and support a good cause!).
